چکیده

In this paper we show how to modify a large class of evolution strategies (ES’s) for unconstrained optimization to rigorously achieve a form of global convergence, meaning convergence to stationary points independently of the starting point. The type of ES under consideration recombines the parent points by means of a weighted sum, around which the offspring points are computed by random generation. One relevant instance of such an ES is CMA-ES (covariance matrix adaptation ES). The modifications consist essentially of the reduction of the size of the steps whenever a sufficient decrease condition on the function values is not verified. When such a condition is satisfied, the step size can be reset to the step size maintained by the ES’s themselves, as long as this latter one is sufficiently large. We suggest a number of ways of imposing sufficient decrease for which global convergence holds under reasonable assumptions (in particular density of certain limit directions in the unit sphere). Given a limited budget of function evaluations, our numerical experiments have shown that the modified CMA-ES is capable of further progress in function values. Moreover, we have observed that such an improvement in efficiency comes without weakening significantly the performance of the underlying method in the presence of several local minimizers.

Evolutionary Computing for Operating Point Analysis of Nonlinear Circuits

The DC operating point of an electronic circuit is conventionally found using the NewtonRaphson method. This method is not globally convergent and can only find one solution of the circuit at a time. In this paper, evolutionary computing methods, including Genetic Algorithms, Evolutionary Programming, Evolutionary Strategies and Differential Evolution are explored as possible alternatives to Ne...

Globally convergent evolution strategies for constrained optimization

In this paper we propose, analyze, and test algorithms for constrained optimization when no use of derivatives of the objective function is made. The proposed methodology is built upon the globally convergent evolution strategies previously introduced by the authors for unconstrained optimization. Two approaches are encompassed to handle the constraints. In a first approach, feasibility is firs...

Evaluating the Growth and Evolution of Facility Management in Innovating Integrating and Aligning Business Strategies to Achieve a Competitive Advantage

The South African Facilities Management (FM) industry has seen increased operational strategy complexity from single-site contractors providing basic janitorial services to highly integrated and bundled FM service providers.  Despite these major changes, very little research has been conducted on evaluating the effectiveness of FM in innovating, integrating and aligning business strategies to a...

Mathematical Biology

The evolution of a consumer exploiting two resources is investigated. The strategy x under selection represents the fraction of time or energy an individual invests into extracting the first resource. In the model, a dimensionless parameter α quantifies how simultaneous consumption of both resources influences consumer growth; α < 0 corresponds to hemi-essential resources, 0 < α < 1 corresponds...

Phylogenetic origins of biological cognition: convergent patterns in the early evolution of learning.

Various forms of elementary learning have recently been discovered in organisms lacking a nervous system, such as protists, fungi and plants. This finding has fundamental implications for how we view the role of convergent evolution in biological cognition. In this article, I first review the evidence for basic forms of learning in aneural organisms, focusing particularly on habituation and cla...
